My dear,
Yes, I know it’s good to shower material happiness on those you love (and you are not a fault for doing so). But, the greatest happiness of life is not found in possessions.
The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved – loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.
For unlike materials, the ones that love us, truly love us, for ourselves, love us not because of what we’ve done, how much we’ve acquired, or because of how we look. They love us in spite of all that. They love us even though we’re hypocritical. They love us even through we’re frail. And they love us, especially, when it’s hard to love us.
Falsely yours,
Victor-Marie Hugo
